Why do doctors seem to do less and less scheduled gall bladder operations????

i mean, is it cuz of mal-practice lawsuits?? my doctor wants to wait until i actually have an acute attack { i have gall stones!!}, and it runs in my family to get gall bladders taken out anyway!!! is there a legitimate reason for this, or, should i get a second opinion???
