Chistmas Caroling Questions?

I am a 15 year old high school student and i need to raise money for band fees for school. I thought a great way to do this would be to go around my neighborhood in December, and play Christmas music on my saxophone on peoples doorsteps and politely ask for donations. I really dont know anything about caroling, and i dont know any caroling "etiquette". Any advice?
